The passion of being small

Seth Godin kicked it off, and Chris Brogan follows suit: Is it a weapon or an excuse to be a small company rather than a big one?

Both agree that it’s a weapon, and I think so to. Because you don’t have to think long, before you can draw quite a list of positives by being a small company:

  • Decision making is easier.
  • There’s less red tape.
  • The path from idea to execution is a lot shorter.
  • You have the maximum flexibility and agility in what you do.

But to me the greatest thing of all is the ability to live out your passion for whatever it is, you’re doing. Give it max throttle and see where it takes you with a blatant disregard for organizational issues, corporate policies or even strategies. It’s just a lot of freedom.

Of course freedom comes at a price: The stable paycheck. But I strongly believe that being able to follow your passion and being unleashed towards doing what you do best will result in happy customers and more than enough projects and revenue to counter this slight drawback of independent life. At least that’s my experience.
